Firearms Instructor Certification Courses
All non-certified law enforcement personnel will at a minimum have one-year experience with their agency prior to becoming an instructor and will not be a probationary employee. Supporting documentation is required. In order to attend an instructor class, you must provide proof of the following:
Firearms Instructor: (72) hours or more of instruction from an Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified Firearms Instructor. This includes all Firearms related courses.
Certificates issued after the previous training was completed indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training and numbers of hours, or a letter signed by your department’s hiring authority or training officer on department letterhead indicating the type of training, the instructor’s name, date and location of the training, and the number of hours are required documentation.
After your on-line registration is completed supporting documentation is required.
Documentation must be received within 10 days of the scheduled Instructor course. Hand carried documentation will not be accepted. Verification of previous training must be completed before the beginning of each course.
These two-week courses, instructed by Academy staff, will provide Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification as a firearms instructor and will give graduates the skills to establish and operate a departmental firearms program. Topics to be covered will include: weapons safety, principles of marksmanship, familiarization with various law enforcement weapons systems, weapons maintenance, range management, use of force policy development, civil and vicarious liability, officer killed statistics, body armor, instructor development with videotaped student presentations, semi-automatic pistol, shotgun and rifle, ammunition ballistics and related problems, diagnosis and correction of shooter induced problems, coaching techniques, weapons retention, low light range drills, post-shooting trauma and instructor qualification. Class enrollment will be limited to forty certified Iowa law enforcement officers who will be required to fire a qualifying score of 90% for admission.
