Course Description:

The RDS Instructional Familiarization course is designed to give department instructional staff a hands on experience of MRDS handgun familiarization, training, skill and technique development and presentation points for their department training objectives. This course will provide the student with a basic understanding of the RDS, common RDS issues and operations and the best effective instruction and use of their RDS for duty and tactical applications. ILEA Firearms Instructor status is recommended but not required.

  • System Failures and Issues - Optic Failures, Co-Witnessing, Occluded Optics Drills, Fractured Lens Drills, Line of Sight Fire
  • System Functionality - Optics types
  • Equipment, Holster Acquisition Drills with FTX's
  • Firearms fundamentals applied to the MRDS
  • Shooter Analysis and Diagnostics
  • Optics Challenge FTX - Stress, Acclimation and FTX's
  • Instructional / Skill Development - Failure as an option and Micro Drills
  • Drawing from the Holster
  • Reloads with RDS
  • Malfunction and Remediation - Weapon and Optics
  • Washout

Cost: No Charge

Equipment Needed: 
  • MRDS equipped handgun with 3 magazines (single stack, 5-7 magazines), fresh batteries
  • Holster (cross-draw holsters prohibited) duty belt/gear (for LE or tactical students)
  • Magazine pouch(s)
  • Minimum 350 rounds range ammunition
  • Ear and eye protection
  • Ball cap
  • Long sleeves recommended (pants mandatory)
  • Handheld or weapons mounted light
Range:
  • Basic qualification iron sights at start of range day
  • Basic qualificiation - RDS - end of range day
  • Comparison - Targets
  • Weather or range appropriate clothing
Optional (recommended) gear:
  • Magazine loaders
  • Off range hydration systems or supplies
Prerequisites: Firearms instructor status is recommended but not required. Students MUST have an RDS equipped pistol (duty) and holster for participation in this class. Attendees should have a basic operational understanding of holster work and handgun skills level. This will not be a beginner pistol class.

Note: Students should be at the training facility 15 minutes prior to the start of the course. Please have all weapons systems and magazines unloaded for the course.
