Brian Thompson served as a trooper with the Iowa State Patrol from 1987-2015. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2000. Sgt. Thompson retired from the ISP in September of 2015. He was stationed at District 7 in Fort Dodge from 1987-1993. He transferred to District 2 in Osceola until 1998 where he then transferred to the training bureau for the Department of Public Safety. Prior to coming to the ISP he was an officer for the Forest City Police Department for three years. During his career with the ISP he has had many duties which include being a drill instructor and primary Defensive Tactics and Physical Fitness for several DPS Academies. He has also served as a member of the tactical unit, technical accident investigator, executive protection unit, FTO and law update instructor. He is currently holds instructor certifications in Defensive Tactics, SPEAR, Firearms, OC, Master Taser Instructor, Physical Fitness, ASP Baton, Chemical Agents and Less Lethal Weapons.
He grew up in Britt, Iowa and holds an AA degree from North Iowa Area Community College in Business Management. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University Police Staff and Command School and numerous other conferences and seminars that he has attended during his career.
While at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy he will be the primary Defensive Tactics Instructor including striking instruments and chemical munitions, baton and vehicle stops. He will also serve as the lead instructor for SFST’s for the State of Iowa.
He is married to his wife Karen and he has a daughter Alyssa who is married and lives in the Des Moines area.
