Retired Officer Firearms Qualification Courses
The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 provided that authorized law enforcement officers and retirees may carry firearms nationwide without a permit.
The implementation of this federal law is being left to the individual states and law enforcement agencies. There are two main provisions to this law; retired officers must carry a retired photo I.D. from the department they retired from and you must qualify with your firearm yearly on the current course of fire for active duty law enforcement officers for the state in which you reside. In Iowa, this is the ILEA in-service standard for annual firearms qualification. Retired officers that will be doing their qualification at the Academy need to bring their own duty weapon, equipment and ammunition.
Officers will receive a card indicating current qualification
