Bryan Michelsen’s career spans 33 years. He worked at the Ogden Police Dept. from 1986-1993. The last four years he was the Police Chief. In 1993 he became a Trooper with the Iowa State Patrol. He was stationed in Knoxville, working out of the District 14 Office in Ottumwa. In 2007 he was promoted to Sergeant and stationed in Council Bluffs. He was the Assistant District Commander out of the District 3 Office in Council Bluffs and the District 4 Office in Denison. During this time frame he supervised a vast number of critical incidents. Sgt. Michelsen retired in 2019.
Sgt. Michelsen was an Evidence Sergeant, Field Training Officer Instructor, Traffic Stop Instructor and SFST/OWI Instructor. He was a Drug Recognition Expert for 13 years, Hostage Negotiator and completed Advanced Accident Investigation. He instructed several disciplines at numerous DPS Academies. He graduated from Leadership in Police Organizations School as well as numerous other Leadership Courses. He completed multiple Instructor Development Schools and has received numerous awards and commendations throughout his career.
At ILEA he is instructing Motor Vehicle Law, Verbal Defense & Influence and eight other courses. He also assists with instruction in Precision Driving, Traffic Stops and SFST/OWI. His duties include being the Community Outreach Instructor and he is charged with researching and coordinating specialty schools.
